Success is 80% Psychology 20% Strategy

Business performance is like athletic performance, it starts in the mind.

You can have a very fit athlete, skilled at their individual sport, but if they’re not mentally strong then all that ability and skill is for nothing. Just like you can have someone who’s skilled and experienced at the key aspect of their business, but their results are suffering greatly because they don’t have enough control and influence over their mental and emotional states.

Many of the reasons entrepreneurs struggle are avoidable and are based in the psychological. It’s the symptoms of the mental game which affect the business performance.

So you can have all the top class business advice in the world, but if you’re not in the right mindset to receive, weigh up and implement, it could be wasted.

It starts with your mind. It starts with your psychology.

Your Business Is a Direct Reflection Of You

Most entrepreneurs concentrate on their strengths and like to downplay their weaknesses. This is natural and makes a lot of sense. Usually your business will be strong where you have experience, talent and drive and it will be lacking where you don’t.

Certain gaps in skills can be outsourced or delegated. But this often only happens when there is a substantial weakness that’s been spotlighted. An obvious example is you’re an accountant you’ll have to hire one. You can’t avoid it because of the clear pain and threat motivator of the tax man knocking on your door!

A clear and obvious need requires a solution to fill the gap.

The problem is when there are areas of your business which you can’t outsource or delegate.

These can be a partial blindspot.  Such as:

  • When you know you should follow up with a client but don’t in case they’ve a problem.
  • When you’re nervous about a big meeting so you sell yourself short. Or worse, pass up on a big opportunity because you feel you’ll be ‘found out’ or ‘in out of your depth’.
  • When you’re too stressed so fail to really listen to what your clients are telling you, so don’t serve their needs as well as you could.
  • When you’re underperforming because you’re pulled in so many directions.

So many small business problems are not inherent to the business, but are issues with the business owner’s psychology.

I Feel Your Frustration, Literally

For over 14 years and counting I’ve started businesses in fields as diverse as art consultancy, history and tourism, online video production, e-learning and website development.

So I know from both experiencing it directly and from many friends around me just how difficult running your own business can be, regardless of the sector. It’s not an exaggeration to say it’s one of the hardest things you can do.

Why? Because others get to overlook their shortcomings, whereas entrepreneurs are confronted with most of theirs all the time.

How often have you said, “I just want to do the job”. Yet we’re pulled into roles we wouldn’t have to do in larger companies. Mix that with the level of uncertainty. The steep learning curve of why our clients really do business with us, the desire for respect from our peers as well as our clients. The underlying fear that one day it will all grind to halt. While there are an ocean of books on the subject, people are essentially flying blind.

Your psychology has a massive impact on how effectively you apply any strategy, how closely you listen to your customers and ultimately how well you grow your profits. It’s no wonder few of us are in optimal performance with the amount of things vying for our attention and pulling is in so many directions.

Business is hard enough without having to suffer so many avoidable difficulties.

I’m Far From Perfect

I’ve done it myself and I’m more than a little embarrassed to admit it. For example…

One time, I’d dealt with a tough client. I’d sold them work and they’d bargained hard. All the way to the point where I actually walked out of their house, away from the deal, away from the money. They invited me back. The deal was done.

I’d handled them well and they seemed happy but a week or so after getting paid, I held the phone in my hand. I wanted to call them, to follow up. To further improve the value I had given them. But I hesitated. I was afraid. I was afraid they’d have a problem. They’d somehow want to undo the deal or give me more headaches, more stress. Problems I felt I didn’t need right then. In the end, I never called them.

Yeah they were tough but they’d gotten great value from me. It could have been the start of a very important and lucrative relationship. They were very well connected and just the type of clients I wanted far more of. What could’ve and should’ve been the start of moving my business to the next level, was just a once off. All because of fear.

Fear, I allowed it to control me. Control my decision making.

Can You Relate?

Think about all those times you’re merely reacting to something, not really choosing. Not going with what our better self would do. Fear induced under performance comes in many forms.

Are you ever reluctant to call a client to ensure they’ve had good service or see how they’re getting on? Even though you know it’s the best practice thing to do, that could grow the relationship and increase lifetime customer value.

Have you ever had a time like that? Or maybe more like this…

  • Do you sometimes just feel overwhelmed to the point you’re not getting much done, or feel like a hamster on a wheel? Working all the hours but somehow not moving forward? Or in a fog of confusion?
  • Do you have outbursts of anger? Or do you snap at loved ones?
  • Do you ever feel down, a little depressed, or that your business has lost much of it’s purpose for you?
  • Do you suffer from ‘Imposter Syndrome’? A big client meeting and opportunity, yet you feel you don’t belong or you’re out of your depth?

The problem doesn’t just affect your business. If you’re not showing up as your better self for your clients, they’ll go elsewhere. For your staff, they’ll be underperforming. And for your family, well they’re not getting the best of you either are they?

If you can’t turn off after work, if you’re not present with your spouse or your kids. If you’re feeling conflicted you’re missing out on them, but you’re also dedicated to your work.

Well I saw parts of those in me and many of the business owners around me. Nobody is perfect, but we can be better. It’s not easy, but it’s not as hard as you think.

I vowed I wouldn’t let any poor reactionary decision making limit my business again. I promised myself I’d discover the tools, strategies and techniques to help me take control of my mindset, my mental and emotional states.

Either you’re in control of your emotions or they’re in control of you.

Then I Saw The Light

This was a turning point. If I could help myself, I could and would benefit others. Help entrepreneurs get out of their own way. How to move their thinking, emotions and decisions, so they work for them, not against them.

A foundation in psychotherapy and counseling was a good start but I realized it was not enough. What was needed for massive shifts was a highly results directed synthesis of multiple psychological schools and approaches. The balance of empathy and creativity with practical, actionable, outcome focused strategies creates faster and higher levels of success That’s exactly what I found in Strategic Intervention Coaching. It was a revelation.

Combining this unique approach with my own experiences running businesses, I created something quite unique and very powerful.

Almost Everything You Were Told About Stress Is Wrong

Stress is always bad for you. We should be fighting stress all the time. Stress is only doing us harm.

WRONG

Stress is not always bad for you, that is deeply incorrect. We’ve been told that the classic ‘Fight or Flight’ response is the only stress response. It is not!

There are many. Most notably the ‘Challenge Response’ and the ‘Flow State’

These states are your ally, they enhance your performance
. They feel like victory.

It’s Not Your Fault

It’s ok. You didn’t know this. Sure most stress scientists didn’t know this really until about twenty years ago. Then there were 100s, even 1000s of research papers on every aspect of this before it started creeping slowly in the knowledge of the general public.

So don’t sweat it. It’s not your fault.

Now, today, you get to do something about it.

Research has proven and personal experience has shown: Stress Takes on the Meaning You Give It

Remember Carly Simon and Bruce Springsteen. They both felt the same sensations building up in their bodies before going on stage. Simon labelled them as, “this must mean I’m out of control, it’s anxiety, so I can’t do this”.

Whereas Springsteen felt the same sensations but labelled them as the opposite, “this is my edge, this is exciting, this is nervous energy that will drive me forward to give a great show”.

As the sensations start one person can see them as a sign that there must be a threat so triggers the ‘fight or flight’ response.

The other sees the sensations as helpful or exciting so triggers their ‘Challenge Response’.

Take Up The Challenge

It’s the difference between these two reaction statements. ‘Oh no, I don’t’ think I can handle this’, this evokes the fight or flight response.

However, “this is tough, but I think I got this!”, or “this is scary but I believe I can handle this”, that evokes the Challenge Response.

It’s the difference in mindset.

One where you think you have a good shot and you’re up to the challenge. The other where you simply don’t believe you are.

There’s a physiological difference, it’s not just in your mind. That means your body reacts very differently. To the threat reaction of the fight or flight, your arteries tighten and constrict. (A mechanism to reduce bleeding in case you get cut)

Blood drains from the very front of your brain, known as the prefrontal cortex. This is the area where you plan and have precision thought. That’s why clear thinking is hugely reduced in the ‘flight or fight’ response. It may feel like anxiety or in more extreme cases shock or panic.

Your arteries tighten and your body goes into inflammation. (To prepare to fight bacterial infection from wounds). This was helpful hundreds of thousands of years ago as a reaction from a very dangerous threat. If you’re faced with a tiger, It’s not helpful asking, ‘is that a Bengal or a Sumatran tiger?’ No, you don’t need to be thinking too much, all energy should be on getting to safety and survival. This is less helpful in most of today’s situations.

But the Challenge Response that’s radically different. You’re still highly alert, still evoking a strong stress response, but it’s more like what you get from very challenging exercise. Your arteries stay supple.

There’s still blood flow to your prefrontal cortex, clear thinking part of the brain. The difference is you’re not merely trying to desperately survive.

You’re getting ready to thrive.

“Yes I CAN do this, yes I’m GOING to do this”.[/x_columnize][/cs_column][/cs_row][/cs_section][cs_section bg_color=”hsl(0, 0%, 85%)” parallax=”false” style=”margin: 0px;padding: 45px 0px;”][cs_row inner_container=”true” marginless_columns=”false” style=”margin: 0px auto;padding: 0px;”][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”1/3″ style=”padding: 0px;”][x_image type=”none” src=”https://almcbride.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/12/feetoverage01sml.jpg” alt=”” link=”false” href=”#” title=”” target=”” info=”none” info_place=”top” info_trigger=”hover” info_content=””][/cs_column][cs_column fade=”false” fade_animation=”in” fade_animation_offset=”45px” fade_duration=”750″ type=”2/3″ style=”padding: 0px;”][cs_text]

Your Gut Was Right

Think about it. Think of some of your proudest moments in your life or business. When you struggled against the odds to get the job over the line. Maybe you even surprised yourself.

Those were not calm relaxed times. No, they were entwined with stress.

The stress response that fired was not ‘fight or flight’, the thing we’re told we should always be ‘fighting’.

No, what fired was your ‘Challenge Response’ . Or sometimes you even moved into the ‘flow state’. You knew you were up against it, that it wasn’t going to be easy, but you said, ‘this is going to be tough, but I think I can handle it’.

And you did.

You stood up and proved you were up to the challenge!

That’s why so many people are mixed up about stress. Because we all know too well what ‘bad stress’ feels like and how bad for our health it is. But we also have stress as a significant factor in some of our greatest victories.

So your gut was right. Stress can feel good, because it can be good.

It can feel like victory. It can be your ally.

I’m saying it doesn’t just have to be an accident. I’m saying you can have far less of the bad stress, and far more of the good.

If You’re In Reaction, You’re Affected

Half the people I talk to say, ‘oh my god I need that program’. It’s like asking a thirsty person would they like a glass of water. They get it immediately.

So often I hear people say, “oh that sounds like a great program Al, but I’m not really affected by stress”. And some people aren’t.

But then I ask them about their symptoms. When are they in reaction rather than doing exactly what they want to be doing, and it slowly starts to become clear.

You Know You’re In Reaction When:

  • You’re not doing what you strategically believe to be in alignment with where you want to go, for the benefit of you, your business and your clients.
  • You’re fire fighting and not getting what you really know you need to get done
  • You’re not taking action on something because you’re too (insert excuse here), even though you know it’s not best practice.
  • You find yourself letting down your clients, knowing that you could have done a better job for them and you’re not proud of it

Simply when you know you’re not making decisions in line with what your best self would do.

The Greats Anticipate

There’s a simple spectrum:

At one end is Reaction, then Action and way down the far end is Anticipation.

You can’t be doing the few key things that will really improve and grow your business if you’re constantly in reaction. Then you’re working on someone else’s plan, time table, schedule. You’re just reacting to them, not acting with autonomy. Or acting with long term focused purpose.

Of course we all are in reaction at times. It’s changing the breakdown of where you spend most of your time and moving you further over, more time in Action and more in Anticipation.

We want to move up to increasing the amount of time you spend in purposeful action that drives your business, so you can spend more time visiting the wonderful land of anticipation. WHY

Think of the greats in every field of human endeavour. Whether it’s in sports, art, finance, science, engineering, entrepreneurship, strategy, you name it.

As Wayne Gretzky, arguably the greatest ice hockey player said,

“I skate to where the puck is going to be, not where it is”

The greats anticipate. Then everyone else has to react to them.

If you want to be not just good but great, you need to anticipate. To anticipate, you need to be more aware of your mental and emotional states and have tools and strategies to quickly get you out of reaction. Out of those ruts and back making the biggest difference and contribution.

Improved thinking, leads to greater awareness of emotions, which combine to for clearer decision making and more effective action leading to improved results.

RISE stands for:

R – Resilience: The ability to move forward and through our struggles and things that knock us off balance, to quickly get ourselves unstuck and even get stronger from adversity.

I – Insight: Be more fully aware of ourselves, our habitual states, beliefs and triggers and how we connect with others to be increasingly effective in our thinking and actions.

S – Strategy: Plan a few steps ahead but have the versatility to quickly adapt to foreseeable and unforeseeable circumstances. The ability to focus on what really matters for greater progress and more focused results.

E – Elevation: Harness our higher values and sense of purpose and use them to navigate and clarify problems, opportunities and choices of action. All so our behaviour, our thinking, and our values are powerfully aligned.

Greater control of your emotional states means, your emotions work with you, not against you. This leads to clearer thinking, greater ability to focus on the underlying needs of your clients, as well as staff and adds up to greater improvement across your business and life.
